For 72-year-old Stan Slokosky, taking the LA Metro train should have been a routine journey home after attending a church concert in Pasadena. Instead it turned into a horrifying and life-threatening ordeal that he is still recovering from two years later. His brutal assault at the hands of a stranger is shedding light on the deteriorating safety conditions across the city’s public transit system. In this article we talk about LA Man Assaulted on Metro Train 2 Years Ago Reflects on Deteriorating Safety.

The Violent Attack That Changed Everything

Slokosky, who has relied on Metro for transportation due to vision issues recalls the shocking incident vividly. “A woman behind me sat down and said ‘You’re blocking my view.’ And I just ignored her” he says. What happened next is the stuff of nightmares – the enraged passenger doused Slokosky with gasoline from a canister before setting him ablaze with a lighter.

Suffering severe burns to his face, torso and arms that required seven weeks hospitalized and three months in a nursing home for treatment Slokosky narrowly survived the vicious and senseless attack. His female attacker was arrested but shockingly has yet to stand trial over two years later according to court records.

Safety Concerns Mounting on LA Metro

While Slokosky didn’t need to see Metro’s latest data showing a surge in overall crimes, his harrowing experience has made him hyper-aware that safety is deteriorating. “I think it is worse now” he says. “A few years ago the only unsafe area was what they called the Blue Line between Los Angeles and Long Beach.”

Now Slokosky says he must stay constantly vigilant when riding trying to keep his distance from passengers exhibiting erratic behavior. The retired senior, who has no other transportation options says “I think there’s a lack of law enforcement presence” when navigating the Metro system’s various rail lines.

A Wake-Up Call on Public Transit Security

Slokosky’s miraculous survival story is an alarming wake-up call about the lack of security for the hundred of thousands who rely on LA’s Metro trains and buses daily. Despite being one of the largest public transit systems in the country reports continue to surface about violent incidents and crimes occurring due to inadequate policing.

Elected officials and transit authorities can no longer ignore the pleas from riders like Slokosky urging swift reforms and prioritization of safety measures. This could include sending more police/security into the Metro system utilizing more surveillance technology and implementing stricter policies to ban criminals and prevent violence.

While no resident should have to fear for their life utilizing public transportation Slokosky’s experience shows the worst-case scenario has become a reality without urgent action. A defined well-funded security plan for LA Metro is crucial to restoring rider confidence and preventing further disturbing attacks.

Stories like Slokosky’s are a sobering reminder that a civic resource meant to make LA more accessible and connected has instead become an underground area of chaos and danger without oversight in many areas. The community deserves better than to accept daily fear as the price of public transit in a major American city. Officials must act to get the system under control and send a clear message that safety will be the top priority moving forward.
